Sometimes We Laugh

Genesis 18:9-15

They said to him, "Where is Sarah your wife?" And he said, "She is in the tent." Gen 18:10  The LORD said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son." And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. Gen 18:11  Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. Gen 18:12  So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, "After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?" Gen 18:13  The LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?' Gen 18:14  Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son." Gen 18:15  But Sarah denied it, saying, "I did not laugh," for she was afraid. He said, "No, but you did laugh."

Abraham had a visitor to his camp when he was at Hebron.  This visitor was none other than the pre-incarnate Jesus Christ; in the Scriptures this is called a theophany.  Abraham recognized that this was something totally out of the normal, which we can see by the way he responded to the arrival of these guests.  This was the Lord Jesus Himself and two of His angels.  And the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. Gen 18:2  He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth Gen 18:3  and said, "O Lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant.  Hospitality was an important part of the culture in that time, and Abraham wanted to do for them as much as possible.  He asked the visitors to stay for a while so that he could host them in the proper way.  They agreed to his offer, so he went to prepare a special meal.

When all was ready, Abraham brought the meal and put it before them.  Can you imagine being in the presence of God and His angels as they ate?  Abraham could only stand there and be amazed.  But what amazed him more was that when they were finished, they had a wonderful message for him and his wife.  They said to him, "Where is Sarah your wife?" And he said, "She is in the tent." Gen 18:10  The LORD said, "I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son." And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him.  Wow, what a message!  Abraham remembered that God had promised him and his wife a child, but really, he was a hundred years old, and she was ninety.  What kind of message was this?  Sarah did not know how to accept it either.  She had been listening from the tent door, and this message was so unexpected that she laughed.  All her life she had prayed for a child.  That was what women of that day hoped for and expected from the time they were married.  But now, at her age, really!

The Lord questioned Abraham about the action of his wife.  Here was the promise they needed.  Is anything too hard for the LORD?  There is a promise we need to remember also.  Nothing is too hard for God.  Nothing, nada, zip.  So, if this is true, why do I doubt when the Lord asks me to do something for Him?  How did Sarah respond?  Probably like we would.  But Sarah denied it, saying, "I did not laugh," for she was afraid. He said, "No, but you did laugh."   God knew the truth.  She had laughed.  That was why the name of the child was to be Isaac, because his name means “laughter.”  This is the promise from God.  Even though sometimes we don’t believe that God’s miracles can happen, if God says it, that’s all we need.
